For obvious reasons, charities are strictly regulated, and are governed by rules that affect almost every type of transaction which they are likely to undertake. If Trustees do not recognise this, the consequences are severe - for the charity and for those people who are responsible for its governance and management.

The Charity Commission's role is increasingly that of a regulatory body and its processes for monitoring charities' activities are constantly being extended and refined. The law in this area is changing and charities must keep pace to ensure that they remain efficient and compliant with the law.

Our Charities Team provides an all-round service to charities and other not-for-profit organisations. We act for a number of major and well-established charities and advise charity trustees on sales, purchases and other transactions involving charity land, their responsibilities under trust and charity law and on the importance of maintaining good working relationships with the Charity Commission.

We deal with all aspects of applying to the Charity Commission for registration, schemes to vary existing charitable trusts and the effective use of the various tax exemptions afforded to charities. In addition, our employment and dispute resolution services are available to charities if required.
